Helping Children with the First Days of School
Are you worried about your child starting school? Many parents worry that their child is not emotionally equipped for such a big change.Starting school is an emotional time for the whole family. While you feel proud, you might also feel guilty or worried about leaving them. Usually, children settle into a routine after a week or two, and everyone breathes a sigh of relief. It is wonderful to see your child make friends and grow in confidence.
Why is starting school harder for some children?
For some kids, the transition is very difficult. They may cry, cling to you, and refuse to let you leave. This leaves parents, children, and teachers feeling completely distressed.
Every child is different. Some are naturally calm, while others are easily upset. Sometimes this is just down to their unique personality and genetics. However, if a child consistently cannot cope despite careful preparation, there is usually an underlying trigger.
Understanding the “Fight or Flight” Response
When a child is highly sensitive or easily overwhelmed, their nervous system may be stuck in a state of high alert. This is often caused by an early stressor, a physical shock, or an overwhelming experience (such as a difficult birth or early illness).
The brain’s survival center (the amygdala) works to keep us safe. If it becomes overstimulated, it sends continuous signals to the body to stay on guard. This can cause physical and emotional symptoms, including:
-
- An increased heart rate or shallow breathing
- Stomach tension or digestion troubles
- Poor sleep and general irritability
- A loss of self-confidence
Because the child’s body feels like it is in a threatening situation, the new variables of a school environment become completely overwhelming. They simply do not feel safe enough to handle the challenge yet.
How Kinesiology Can Help Your Child Feel Safe
As a kinesiologist specialising in children’s emotional and behavioural wellbeing, I use gentle, non-invasive techniques to help calm these overactive primitive survival responses.Kinesiology combines modern insights into the nervous system with traditional acupressure techniques (strictly no needles) to balance emotional stress. By assessing the body’s involuntary “fight or flight” patterns, we work together to:
-
- Identify hidden or early childhood trauma triggers.
- Gently release the “stuck” fear state in the nervous system.
- Restore a deep, natural sense of safety and calm.
When these trauma emotions are balanced, a child’s background distress settles down, making it much easier for them to face new environments like school.
Parent Testimonial: Lisa’s Story
“My 7-year-old daughter, Lisa, found it very difficult to separate from me during her second year of school. Every morning ended in tears and distress, no matter how much I reassured her. She was self-conscious about it, which made it worse.
We decided to try stress-management sessions with Tony Galvin. He was wonderful with her and made the process feel like a game. He explained that her nervous system was just holding onto a ‘stuck’ stressful emotion. After the first 45-minute session, she became much more relaxed. The next day at school, the heavy weight seemed to lift, and there were no tears. After two more sessions, her confidence grew significantly, and she didn’t have a single teary day again.”
